From Jill & Lester – As I’ve said before, Mexico never ceases to surprise. Every day has been a blast. Today for example our plan for the day was to hire a couple of bikes and check out Merida a city of about 800,000. As we drove down to the bike hire outfit we got the feeling something was up as a lot of the center city roads were blocked off. Turned out the main street was closed off and alive with AC DC music at full noise while a pro bike race took place. Made the hiring of bikes with the language problem that much more difficult with Thunder Stuck blaring out of a speaker 5mtrs away! So away from there we went on our trusty steeds to pretty much deserted streets. We’ve noticed before now that Mexicans are generally nocturnal and particularly slow starters on a Sunday. Spent a pleasant couple of hours exploring the place before noticing that any Mexican that was awake was glued to a TV screen. Turned out there was a game of football on that was creating a bit of interest. Mexico was playing World cup champion s Germany with only an outside chance of a win. So what happened….they won of course. The place goes ballistic. We were sitting having a coffee overlooking a road roundabout on the main drag.It went from real quiet to the deployment of the riot police and chaos in minutes. Crazy. Had another really good dinning experience on the way home. We are very impressed with the Mexican food. It seldom disappoints.
So tomorrow the plan is to take in a few more ruins. Apparently an hours drive from here lies one of the seven wonders of the world. Chicken Itza.Prepare yourselves for a barrage of snapchat ruins photos in the early hours folks!
I’ll promise to do my best to restrain her.
Take care all.
