Te Anau is now a behind us as we head to Twizel, the sun is out, the day is perfect for travelling and it is good to be back on the road. Lunch was at Kingston at the southern end of Lake Wakatipu, the day as said was beautiful and we found a lovely spot for a sandwich and coffee. Caught up with Jude’s sister Jill at Bannockburn on the way through, as brief as it was it was good to see her. We arrived at Twizel at 1800hrs, it was still sunny and very warm. We stayed the night at the Combined Services Club in Twizel… an agreement the NZMCA has with ClubNZ. A handle of black beer at the club before returning to our Moho for tea. Pan fried sole fillet and salad was just right. First thing the following morning it was of to Ohau as we have a 60th birthday for Jude’s cousin Wendy tonight. Although Jude has been to Ohau before it was a first for myself. What a lovely little village and the lake like any lake on a beautiful day was just beautiful. After the initial arrival meeting with some of the team we would share tonight with we went down to the lake with our Moho to find a place to stay for the night. We parked in spot along the lake shore, it was hot, clear and hardly a breeze…. perfect for a lunch beside Lake Ohau. Returning to where the others were staying I enjoyed another lunch and a beer. The evening birthday was going to be held at the Ohau Lodge at 1900hrs so it was back to the Moho for a rest before festivities. The wind had come up and although still pleasant we wondered if we should look for a more sheltered site for the Moho… earlier Jude had pointed out a spot at a DOC site at Lake Middleton as we headed into Ohau and closer to where our friends were…. what a lovely site, shelter from the westerlies should they arrive and the warmth of the late afternoon sun… and the only ones there. The birthday dinner started at 1900hrs at the Lake Ohau Lodge, I will have to agree with everyone that the service was really good and the food even better. It was after 2300hrs when we headed back to the campsite, quite weary from a big day but Jude and I wanted to wake at 0400hrs for the All Blacks and Springboks game, we were of to bed ASAP. “GO THE AB’s”
